Weekend Update 1/29/2006 04:11:00 PM

Sorry, no Tina Fey or Amy Poehler here, but I did have some adventures this weekend that turned out a few good pics at my photobucket. Links Here:

Leed's Castle & Canterbury

Chinese New Year in London

Saturday we got up at 8:00 (which seemed excruciatingly early at the time)to go meet friends for breakfast before the trip (bus was to leave at 9am) only to discover that the Refectory was not open. Great. So after moping about our certain death without food, the growing number of students sitting in the hallway (I like to pretend we were protesting rather than just being lazy and complaining) the Refectory opened their doors early for us.

So we ran in, grabbed as much as we could carry, and took off for the busses. Unfortunately I don't believe 2 red bulls was really necessary for myself that morning, as the remainder of the day I found I had much more energy than others (which seemed quite annoying to them). Anyhow, after being way too loud and cheery on the bus and not letting anyone sleep, we finally arrived 2 hours later at Leed's Castle.

To get to the castle we had to walk through the duckeries, where lots of ducks, swans, geese, and even peacocks were running around like mad. Of course, the first group decision of the day was to feed the birds Steph's muffin. Which they seemed to like (at least someone got to enjoy it). Somehwere along the way I decided that there was a really cool looking tree, and I wanted my picture taken in it. So while I climed, Becca joined me, and the rest of the group abandoned us. We caught up with them later and took some group pictures in front of the castle (that and the tree picture coming later...after I find out who the heck took them).

Walking through the castle was pretty amazing, after I got over the fact that it had a moat. Just seeing the craftsmanship on the wood beams on the ceiling, or carved into the staircases, and realizing how old everything is, was pretty inspiring.

After we finished mosy-ing through that, we met up on the busses again, and stopped in Canterbury on the way home. I decided that visiting the town was much less painful than reading the 'Tales' (and yes, I did get Mrs. Bond a postcard, just to explain this reasoning to her). We stopped in lots of quaint little shops, and ate at a cute little breakfast cafe. It was nice. Lots more fun pictures including dumpster surfing to come later as well (once again, after I beat someone down for information/pics).

When we got home, we grabbed a bunch of junk food and chocolate from the Refectory and headed up to our rooms to watch a movie. 'Scream' ended up being the flick of choice, which was hilarious (and somehow really scary for Noel, who had never seen it as a kid, when it actually was scary). Although it's somewhat dated (seriously, try finding a killer based on the fact he uses a cell phone these days) it really is a great artifact documenting 90's pop-culture.

Today, Sunday, we went to China-Town for Chinese New Years (it's the year of the Dog), and got lost in the massive crowds. Seriously, it was like a giant mosh pit wherever there happened to be dancing dragons. Unfortunately after we realized the terrible mistake of trying to get close to one to get pictures, we were unable to escape them for the rest of the time. We just gotten away from the mob one time, when suddenly the dragon comes around the corner after us, so tons of people start swarming us again. Then we decide to move further down the street, only to run into TWO MORE dancing dragons. This was the worst part.

Because there were not only one, but two dragons, people were swarming in from both ends of the street, and we were stuck in the middle, we had tried to get out each way, but eventually were literally unable to move at all, so we decided we would just wait (as if we had a choice) smashed up against people, and being pushed from both sides, for the dragons to pass us. Finally they did, and we had a bit of elbow room, so we started dodging our way out, and finally escaped.

Although the smashing and mobs were a bit much, none of us are chlostraphobic, so we lived, and it was worth it. But just a word of advice: For anyone highly annoyed by stupid people in general, avoid Chinese New Year celebrations and crowds in general ;)

Crazy Londoners!!! 1/26/2006 08:35:00 PM

Although my little lead in here has less to do with the actual mental state of people living in the city of London and more to do with what happens when you get stir crazy without any FREAKIN' WIRELESS INTERNET! . You get a bit hostile. Shit happens.

Anyways, I had been meaning to come rant about this, but haven't felt enough like ranting lately, but tonight's a good night for it.

1) because I took a 3 hour nap today, and now I can't go to sleep (its 2:35am here)
2) because I can't go to sleep and I have no internet in my room, so I have to be down here in this hot stuffy lab
3) I started talking to Charley about concerts and it reminded me of this

So, as a big fan of the Wizard of Ooohs and Ahhs, better known as Mr. Jason Mraz, I was excited to learn that he would be overseas during the same time I am. So over winter break, I tried to purchase some tickets to a show over here, but stupid Ticketmaster UK wouldn't let me because once I selected UK for delivery, it wouldn't let me use my American Billing address. So I figure, no big deal, the shows aren't untill March anyways, I'll just get tickets once I'm over there.

Yeah, so I get here, and of course, in all the excitement forget about it for a couple days, get online, and find out all the shows are sold out. Of course, he's also doing a couple opening for James Blunt. So I figure, no biggy, I love James Blunt, if I have to see Mraz as an opener its all good. I've done it before (*cough* Alanis Morrissette, anyone?). Yeah, all those sold out instantly too.

So then, because Mraz's label/management notice there is such high a demand they book a couple more shows for him to circle back round to London on his own in Aprilish, while he's still overseas. ALL OF THOSE SOLD OUT TOO!.

To make matters worse, guess who was opening for these few shows? Raul Midon. Whom I ADORE! Yeah, even though I've seen him open for Mraz before, I still would love to see him perform anytime (I may have to settle for his individual show, that he has the following nights, after all Raul and Mraz is great, but Raul is still Raul)

Seriously though, how does a concert in April, for a couple small shows, when he's playing 3 nights in a row at the same venue, sell out in January! Man, Londoners are either fricken Mraz obsesssed, or just really good at planning ahead.

But speaking of Mraz obsessed....I found out the other night (whilst Abby was mocking me takings pics of the Mary Poppins poster in the subway) that Tiffany also is a huge fan of Mraz. (It started with Abby explaining Poppins, and said I had lots of crazy obsessions like Jason and Kelly Clarkson--whom Tiffany also loves). I think she may be my new favorite person here. Last weekend on the way back from Camden Market we had a good talk the whole way back about small towns (she's from Georgia, and has the slightest accent..the cute kind, not the redneck kind) and schools, etc. and music, and just a lot of stuff we seemed to have in common.

And then today, I'm walking through the hallway with my Geek in the Pink shirt on, and as Tiff passed she was like, "OMG! I have this shirt!" Which is actually more significant than just a mere fashion coincidence (since I obviously have none). Since this means, she's been to a Mraz concert. Which means, I definitely could've had a concert buddy this go-round, if only the damn shows weren't sold out!

< /rant >

little html humor for you geeks out there, in normal english this would mean, 'end rant'

About Time I Saw An Opera 1/26/2006 06:31:00 PM

You know what I mean? I think it's been long enough since I've managed to deal with only 'Rigoletto' (don't deny it, you loved that movie---or you never saw it as a child, and are extremely confused, and thinking me quite dorky at this particular moment) on VHS, but I think it's high time I saw some of it for real right in front of my face.

And I'll get to do just that this semester in my Classical Music in London course. Of course, I'll also get to go to some symphony orchestra concerts, which will be amazing. I'm already getting all tingly and excited thinking about it. Overall for the class, we'll get to go to 6 concerts (for FREE!) at various venues, and styles of venues (concert hall, theatre, maybe even a church), and sample the various genres that fall under the umbrella of the word 'Classical'.

Believe me, when I finally have fricken wireless internet in my room, I'll be raving about them. As of yet, I'm still wire-less. I've gotten the info from my computer that I needed, installed my nifty little card, registered my machine with the campus, and even configured it with their little passwords for the network, and still nothing. A lot (note the space, Aunt Ann) of other students have been having similar problems, so I'll just end up waiting in the queue (if that's how you spell it) at the IT Centre (yes, that one's spelled correctly, it's center, but with class).

And for the visually stimulated, here's a couple pics I managed to sneak on my little trip down Oxford St. (a fairly popular one here, comparable to a busy shopping street in New York, who's name I cannot recall) when we went to get books the other day (the campus bookstore literally has none that I need).

This giant screen-thingy is rather cool. Kinda Times Square reminiscent.

..and although Abby wouldn't pose on one of the fountains, she did strike a less touristy, more distracting one:

This weekend I'm going on a trip to visit Leeds Castle and Canterbury, so I should have some really cool pics from those sometime soon. Until then, Goodnight and Goodluck.

Literary London 1/23/2006 01:23:00 PM

It is one thing to be a reader in exile, while I'm over here (don't ask me why, it's just different not getting to read where you normally read ex: on the couch by the window, or blah blah blah) but to also be living in the place where some of the books you read are written, or set, is something unimagineable untill you actually do it.

Today I was reading Mrs. Dalloway, and sitting in my room @ Regent's, reading Virginia Woolf's words describing the park, and then looking out the window at it, was completely amazing. It adds so much to what you carry with you into the story.

As you might have guessed, I already have started recieving the homework loads. One class I'm particularly excited about, for the reasons I stated above, is my English course, "Modernism & The Novel". We'll be reading (of course) Woolf, James Joyce, Henry James, and D.H. Lawrence, all authors from the Modernist period (roughly 1890-1930) and the funny/neat thing is that along with the list of book titles and mini bios of the authors, we got a little map, of where they lived or hung out, or their stories are set, so that we can go visit these places and get more into their frame of mind as we're reading their texts. Simply put, it's awesome.

So far all of my classes seem like they'll be well. I still haven't had Classical Music In London, but we get lots of field trips (ie: concerts) with that one, so I'm sure I'll love it.

My first class was Ethics in the Media with Olaf the German teacher, which seems promising. I'm excited about learning in that class, I think there will be alot of great stuff to come out of it. Next up was Sociology which was so-so. British teacher, funny, witty, nice. Classmates range from Nigeria to Russia, to Saudia Arabia, to France, and just all over. The worst thing we could have done in this class was to play the name game. And that we did. Guess who was the last person to go (randomly selected, I wasn't in the back of the room) that had to recite every single persons name. Me. Oh yeah.

I could tell that half of the people were already judging me (as one of the only 2 Americans in the class) It didn't help that the other American girl seemed to confirm the 'ignorant American' cliche by seriously butchered some names, and on others not trying at all but just mumbling something similar, and I could tell they were expecting me to do the same. So as soon as the first person went, I was trying my hardest to memorize each name and pronounciation over and over untill it came to my turn, and I have to say, I think I definitely surprised some people. I think I was the only one in the class to get everyones name (I only slightly mispronounced 'Jaled' I think I said it more like "khaleed", when it only needed a soft 'e') and I even got a couple verbal pats on the back at the end ("Good One" or "Good on ya"). I have to say I was quite pleased with myself.

So far, so good.

YAY Steph, you aren't the idiotic American that you were when you left : P. It's good to hear that everything is going well and that you're enjoying your classes. I hope all goes well, and remember soft 'e. Later.

Last Day Before Classes 1/22/2006 04:41:00 PM

Today was a good day. Started off waking up late, because apparently my phone can't tell time, and was a few hours behind. 9AM was really 11AM I guess. I really need to get a little alarm clock. Hopefully I'll wake up for classes tommorrow.

Anyways, since tommorrow has not yet began, and today is past, I'll talk about that. Today at noon I went down to eat lunch with the girls from last night, and then Becca, Jen, Abby, and I went down to Camden Market, were eventually Abby and Jen were lost, and Tiffany (the girl whose name I couldn't remember) and Nohl were found. Of course, me being more into the music than shopping I just kept wandering off to places where I heard Annie Lennox or U2, before they would drag me back like a little kid so I wouldn't get lost. So once I was confined to following everyone into shoe stores that had no interest whatsoever to me besides dancing around to the techno music they blared, we continued on. Finally wearing ourselves out, and realizing we couldn't buy much anyways, we started to head back to campus. Pics from the park and market:

(you can't really tell, but far in the back of these pics, there were a bunch of lads playing rugger/rugby)

On the way back through the park we ran into Lana, and walked with her back to the college, and grabbed a snack in the refectory. Then everyone kinda chilled in their rooms for a bit, and gloated over their meager purchases. Mine involve presents for others so I won't speak of them here. Although I did get the Tracy Chapman Collection (cd) for a pound, which is like $2, so that was amazing. After a while Becca and I went downstairs to find Nohl, Chris, and Anthony to go get supper.

Although some other girls (slightly more annoying and ditzy) decided to come, and then they wanted to go eat Chinese in Picadilly Circus which is kinda far, and you have to take the tube and we were all feeling cheap and like going somewhere quick and within walking distance. So they left with Chris, and the rest of us grabbed Abby and Shawn and decided to just walk down Baker Street and find somewhere, then Shawn and Anthony left us to go to the pub downstairs before we even left campus, so the 4 of us girls ended up at Pizza Express, which is actually more of a fancy bistro, contrary to the image the name provokes. But it was still fairly cheap, and good. So all was well. Afterwards we popped into the tube station to get a piece of candy for an even cheaper dessert, so of course I took pics of those, and posed idiotically for the others in theirs. I'll have to get ahold of those later...:

I thought you said they got rid of the double deckers?? Does that mean that they're still around???

I told you on the last double decker post. Yes they got rid of them, because they were too impractical BUTTTTTTT!!!! They are still running about 6 just for historic purposes, and those ones are the ones with the closed tops.

Powdered Criskets 1/21/2006 07:58:00 PM

Okay, so tonight Abby and I met up with our next door neighbors, Nohl and Becca, and some other people (the names I can remember are Chris, Lana and Katie -who are roomates, and Maura) and went to eat supper at this pub called the The Metropolitan, or The Metro for short.

It was actually pretty cheap and had decent food. While we were there we didn't really know the proper procedure cause we didn't see any waitresses, so we just kinda went and sat at a table ourselves, which ended up belonging to these 3 British blokes. They weren't upset, but they just asked if they could join us (it was a huge table) and they were actually pretty entertaining. They talked a bit about what we should see in London, and wished us luck before they left (they just finished their drinks).

I had myself a proper English meal of Fish & Chips (although I was scolded by bloke #3 for not trying them at a proper fish and chips shop) Ordering it was bad enough though, we had to go to the bar, and I swear I could not understand a word of what the guy was asking me. I didn't think I was too bad with being able to dissect the british accent, but I kept asking him to repeat himself and apologizing. I felt like an idiot. I'll have to work on that.

Afterwards, Abby, Becca, Chris, and a crapton of other people all decided that they were going to wakl to Picadilly Circus and go to another pub there. Nohl, Lana, Katie, and I all decided that we wanted to go back to campus and try to rustle up some people to play board games or watch a movie. So we managed to walk back, without getting lost (yay!) and then all went back to our rooms for a bit.

Later Nohl grabbed me to go get some chocolate from the vending machine (which was broken...she was about gonna take an axe to it, she really wanted this "Twist" bar cause it was labeled "The Intense Chocolate") so after giving up we decided to walk around the 2nd floor randomly to see if we could find Lana and Katie (who actually live on the 3rd floor) but we did find them in Amanda and Jamie's room, just hanging out talking, and so we sat down and joined, and two other girls Laura and Cynthia came in later and stayed, and then eventually Heidi, and then ..holy crap, I just forgot her name...just was just sitting right here next to me in the lab 10 mins ago...she was at dinner...Christina? I don't know. So this other girl that I met earlier in the evening joined us, cause she hadn't felt like hanging out much with the group at Picadilly.

Then we all pretty much just stayed in there laughing and giggling having a girl party. Actually I think the topic of conversation Nohl and I walked into when we found them was Birth Control, so you can imagine the type of Girl's Night it was, with everyone craving chocolate and just being silly sitting around in hoodies and pajama pants. Pretty soon a guy walked by and poked his head in, and tried to make some conversation for a while, but there was just too much estrogen in the room. He at least tried to relate by saying that those 'powdered criskets' everyone was eating were pretty good, but this only enticed us all to laugh at him, as it took a second to realize he was referring to the rice cakes. All in all it was a good night for having absolutely no plans, and just what a few homesick girls needed. But since it is now 2:11am and we are supposed to meet up again for lunch tommorrow, I think I better try and get some rest. Have a good one!

Get that vending machine fixed fast. I really feel for that girl. I hate it when our vending machine won't take my money.

Sounds like you're having a fun time. That's GREAT!!! So tonight me and my UNL friends when to some music concert thing, and since we figure its a nice event we get super-dressed up for no reason!!! It was great nice shirts and ties for the guys, and skirt for the girl. Then we came back and watched a couple movies. Overall it was a really fun night. I hope that things continue to go well in London. See you for Spring Break!!! Later.

Oyster What?! 1/21/2006 10:42:00 AM

As you may have noticed, the blog may look a bit different since the last time you checked in. I figured since I had a specific layout for freshman year in the dorms, and then a new one from living in my apt. sophomore year, that what the heck--London deserves something special too. So although I liked the layout I had previously, I just made a few minor changes. Mainly the blue. I also added a link to my photobucket on the right. For some it may just be easier to have the link here, so all they have to do is come to one site, and click their little hearts away from there. I'm still going to post some pictures here in occassional blogs, but when I have just way too many from major trips (ie: Spring Break) the vast majority will remain there, leaving the fun details via text to fill up the space here.

So what's new since last time?

Well, yesterday I rode the 'tube' (London Underground) for the first time. Everyone was telling me I should just get an Oyster Card. For starters, I had no idea what was coming out of people's mouths. Seriously, some of these accents are thick. Secondly, once I thought I was definitely hearing the word 'oyster' I was really confused. Ends up, and Oyster card is like a little card that you can put cash on to use continuously on the tube system without having to buy a ticket each time, and ends up being much faster and cheaper per ride.

So you get this little thing:

and just swipe it through the mini toll booths each time you enter and exit the stations. I ended up putting £17 on mine (there was a £3 fee, so spent £20 total, about $35) which apparently was a little overzealous. When I came back, everyone else had put down £5 to £10. But hopefully mine will last me the whole semester, and I wont have to top it off again, haha.

So the most amazing part of this story....I got on the tube for the first time...AND! I didn't get lost! Woohoo!

Well, that's not completely true. Abby and I followed the signs of where we thought we were supposed to go, rather than the group of people, which made us think we were lost, but ended up being a good thing, cause it was really the group of stupid people who went to the wrong platform. So after we found out we really weren't lost we got to celebrate for somewhat knowing what we were doing.

After all that, we met our tour guide for the Jack the Ripper walk, which ended up being quite good. It was pretty dark, and I didn't want to keep killing this guy with my flash, so I didn't take many pics, but here are a few:

This is Adam (tour guide)in front of the great wall that used to separate "London" from "Greater London", it was an area heavily bombed in WW2.

The wall also separated the lower and upper classes, and there were two different police forces for each side, so that's why our story began here. The funny thing about this wall is that, on the left and right of it, are two extremely modern hotels, that just built right next to and up and over the top if it. So it was kinda weird visiting these historic sites, with so much of today splashed into it.

This is infront of 'The Prostitutes Church' where back in the 'Rippers day, it was illegal to stand still on this busy street, so the prostitutes would just walk in a circle 'round the church all day, hence it became known as the Prostitutes Church. Not to sure what the Church of England thinks of that moniker though...

The Ten Bells Pub, which actually existed in this very spot back in the 1880s. I don't remember it's exact part in the story, but it was also very close to the 3rd and 4th murders, and the wall where the infamous message "the Jues are the men who will not be blamed for nothing" was written by the Ripper and then erased by a policeman, ruining any clue it may have provided (hmmm, suspect?).

I think the best part of the tour was that Adam had a nice scottish accent, and these killer side-burns (you can't tell from the pics, but they're awesome), so it really helped set the 'Ripper-like' mood ;)

Well Ello There! 1/20/2006 07:18:00 AM

Ah yes, the first blog post about my journey abroad. Since it is that, I suppose I should begin with just that. The journey.

So Tuesday night, Marc and I drove up to Omaha, and my aunt had gotten us a room at the hotel/casino Harrah's. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the outside, but you can take my word for it, it was pretty. The room was pretty sweet too, a pity we'd only have the next few hours to sleep there, before getting up at 5am to take me to the airport. I did however manage to take a picture of Omaha from our nice big window.

Time: 5:00am
Day: Wednesday

Marc and I get up, and get ready for me to leave the country. Sad. But the cappuccino cheered me up. Until I spilled (or as the English say 'spilt') it on my shirt. So while we're in line checking baggage, I switch my drenched hoodie for a different one quickly. I think I scared the guy from "Colorade-O" as he pronounced it. After baggage, Marc walks me to the security check line where we part ways. Him back to the LC, and me to St. Louis. Well, not quite yet. First I have to wait for about 2 hrs, so I call up moms, and buy Memoirs of a Geisha for some good reading material. I've been meaning to get it for a while, and this seemed like the perfect occasion. Then I get on this sucker

and fly over to Omaha

and land at Lambert Airport in the Lou.

Here, I have to go down and get my crapton of luggage, and drag it up the stairs (escalator=out of order) and get my butt on a shuttle to go to the main terminal, so I can check my bags and go through security again, since I'm switching from Southwest to American Airlines. But I did see a nice big Wicked poster, so that made me happy. So happy, I naturally had to take a pic with my new camera, of course doubling the happiness.

Once I'm in Gate C at around 8-ish, I wander a bit (my flight wasn't till 2-ish), find out my cd player is broken, talk to Reid, and then Abby gets there, and around 12-ish more Webster kids start arriving, so we make social, and get to know everyone. Finally we board this plane:

and begin our ways to Chicago. There, we only have an hour and a half layover, so Abby grabs some rag mags (she loves celebrity gossip more than I do) I get a new cd player ($50, but I've been needing a new one forever now, plus I had a 9hr flight to London coming up), we get some lunch from McDonalds, and I meander off to get some foreign cash

and find another Wicked mini-billboard.

It takes me forever to get back. Abby thinks I'm lost.
(Doesn't she look concerned?)

So then, we get aboard our nice luxurious, spacious, anything else with an -ious, international aircraft. The flight isn't cleared for take off for nearly an hour, so I wait and take pics of the inside of the aircraft.

Doesn't it look nice?

Anyways, it's somewhere around 5 or 6 once we actually start moving. I stopped keeping track of time at this point figuring once I was on the plane it didn't really matter anymore, since all would be lost in a matter of miles. The flight was actually really nice. Not much turbulence, sufficient space, we were served dinner, and breakfast, and had some tv/movie entertainment in front of us. I settled for some episodes of CSI.

I can't help it. I love that show. So in an effort to try and make my landing/morning in London a little easier, I decide to try and sleep the whole flight, since we'd be landing in L-town at 6:50am, even though that would have been my normal midnight for that day. Somewhere over Quebec I woke up and watched some Joey (guest starring Lucy Liu) and then fell asleep to some Mraz singing about planes going down. Amidst some slight turbulence, one would find this creepy, but it was eerily comforting. Then later I wake up about :45 mins away from landing.

From the air, in the dark, I decide London looks like any other city at night. (An astute observation) I wasn't by the window, so unfortunatly no comparison pic to the Omaha one. Once we land, we scurry off to the Passport Check/Customs, and wait in the longest line known to man. Serioulsy the whole place was just one big roped off line, running back and forth across the room. Of course, what better way to welcome a person to London than by sticking them in a que right away.

After I am officially let into the country (pretty easily actually, I think waiting in line was the hardest part--though no easy task, mind you) I follow the signs to claim my baggage, grab a cart (there's no way I'm hauling this after suffering once before in St. Louis) and Abby and we make our way to the Taxis. Outside, we walk over to this guy in uniform and he beckons a taxi for us and tells us "This 'uns yours" He's speaking in British! I love it!

So our taxi cab driver is seemingly quite nice. I wish I'd taken a pic of the outside, cause it was a really cool looking cab. Like a mini cross mated with a mini-bus. Thus begins our £60 (nearly $100.00) trip to Regent's Park. The taxi man helps us carry our luggage which was more than nice, so we tip him £10. He was excited. We must be very generous in our naivety. Did you know that in Australia they don't tip for anything? Not waiters, not taxis, nothing. Anyways...

Tired and grimy, I get to my room, find out I'm roomies with Abby (nice random surprise) unpack, shower, go to the reception/orientation meeting, and crawl in bed and crash at like 8pm (here). So since my room is now somewhat decent looknig here's some pics:

Here's the doorway of course:

On of our neighbor girls said as dorky as it is, she wishes that we had nametags. Though we couldn't commit to doing this for her, Abby and I said we'd tape some on our door for her ;)

The room is actually bigger than I thought it'd be.

...and here's my closet:

Well, I think that's about it. I'll have more pictures of the outside etc. later. Tonight I'm going on the Jack the Ripper tour, so there should be some fun pics of downtown London as well. But for now, I'm going to go eat lunch in the Refectory for the first time. Wish me luck!

I Feel Lion King-y 1/15/2006 10:46:00 PM

I have two days left before I leave the country for four months, and although I'm a bit nervous, and kinda feel rushed, like I'm running out of time and there's still too much to do (although even if I had another week I probably still wouldn't feel prepared)although there's this settling calm that just sorta takes over when I think about it, like, "It's Time". 'Cause really it is, and although I'm trying to hang on to everything/everyone in the LC knowing that I'll miss them, I am in fact ready to make my little journey. This is the Lion King-y part (well, besides the "It is time" thing *said in a very Rafiki voice*) There's just this feeling of awe-inspiring anticipation, for something greater than I can imagine waiting for me. I know this will be an experience of a life-time, and I can't wait to live through it.

I hope you have an awesome time over there and don't have so much fun you forget about the crazy red head and company back in little ole Nebraska. Good luck and keep in touch!!!!! Heck, I know you'll keep in touch, you're STEPH!

This is going to be an exciting adventure for you. It's just too bad that you aren't going to get to have a giant musical for when you leave ; ). When i first saw the title i thought that this could simply be taken care of by watching a movie, but then after reading it i realized that its something that doesn't neccisarily need to be taken care of, its something that needs to be experienced. I know that everything is going to go well for you in London, its going to be a new adventure filled with exciting new things. And remember that if ever you get down while you're in London, you can look to the stars. "Look at the stars, the great kings of the past are up there, watching over us." "Yes. So whenever you feel alone just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you." Good luck in London, and remember, I'll be over to see in you a short couple months. (spring break is March 11-19)Best of luck overseas and remember, we're only a messenger/email/facebook away.

i AM an odd bird 1/08/2006 02:30:00 AM

I was just headed to bed but I just had to come back and mention that I found one of my brother's shirts in my closet today.

And I wore it.

I do not intend on notifying my brother that he left behind a shirt.

In fact, I plan on taking it to London, where *gasp* I may just wear it again.

It's not that I am particulary fond of this shirt. But perhaps of the owner. I think I miss him. So in remedy...I wear his clothes.

...i've actually done that before. My brother left a shirt when he went to college and to this day it is one of my favorite pajama shirts...he doesn't know I wear it.

Ok, I'm jealous. I don't have a big brother. And some of the stuff Sarah wears these days. . . forget it.

"Quality Time" 1/08/2006 01:22:00 AM

So, I'm sure that many of you have heard me complain in the past about all the crap I used to have to do with my family ex: hunting, fishing, etc. rather than getting to go do something fun w/friends on a weekend, a little thing my mom always referred to as spending "quality time" with the family. Something that just used to feel like an obligation, but now in my later years, and perhaps nudged by the lessening amount of time I'll be spending with family before not seeing them 'till May, I've resolved to play more of this "quality time" game whether I like it or not. Because truth is, even if I don't enjoy it now, I know I'll appreciate it later.

So today, I was feeling kinda blah, and more stay-in-the-house-y (partially because I knew all my friends would be leaving today and I'd be left alone at home planless) and Devin asked me to go golfing with him. Instead of saying I didn't much feel like it, or maybe later, I figured, what the hell else am I gonna be doing all day....nothing--when I could be spending some perfectly good time with even the slightest chance that I might enjoy myself more than by doing nothing, by doing something with Devin, that he asked me to do, and maybe get to know/hang out with this kid more without rejecting him and maybe hurting his feelings.

My mom ended up joining in (although Marc was still at work, and I think a tad jealous when he got home..he likes golf) and we actually had a pretty good time, with mom providing the comic relief for the evening.

Then tonight the boys ended up going out 'coon hunting and my mom and I curled up for an evening of Gilmore Girls (we got through 2 dvds) and hot chocolate, which was quite pleasant. I love watching this show with my mom. And we had a nice little girls night, just me her, weezy, and the cat. And now it is 1:33 am, the boys have returned and everyone's headed for bed.

Tommorrow I will sit with my two aunts, mom, and mom's friend, and scrapbook and feel awkward being a 'youngin' around the 'gals' but I'm some enjoyment will come from it and even if it's not some great memory that stands out to me later on, who knows maybe it will be for one of them, and that definitely makes it worth it.

Things are going well here I'm glad to be back. It's nice to get to see a lot of my UNL friends. Not much has been going on yet, but hopefully when everybody gets back into the flow into things we'll be able to start doing things again. I'm not looking forward to classes so i better get to bed. It's good to hear that you're getting to spend some good time with your family. Later.

Welcome to 2006! 1/04/2006 02:34:00 PM

Please take your seat and then jump up out of it and say "Hell no! I won't take this sitting down!!" and then run out of the room crying....

I dunno, just an idea.

So obviously, I am over my shlumpy mrumpy mood about post-holidays. I am just simply and purely excited for this year. 2005 was okay, but I want to make 2006 great! And so far it has been. I've gotten to spend lots of time with friends whilst home (and will be doing more of that tonight--bowling! Woo!) and am getting excited for my journey abroad.

I've been thinking of some new resolutions to make, that I will talk about in my blog (which I resolve to write more often, and better, with more oomph!) But all is well in the new year so far. No major upsets and already I'm pretty stoked.

In fact, feeling so good I'd say I'm feeling SURPRISE!! . It's my new catch phrase. Not perfected yet, in fact, not even used yet, but I believe in my self in 2006 and I think I can make it happen. I hope to make this the biggest catch phrase since "Gag me with a spoon" and "Steak it UK!!" It's all in the delivery. If you can actually startle the person you're talking to, you've said it correctly. Go ahead, try it, you'll never look back.

YAY!!! New Blog post. Even though i checked your blog this morning i so never saw this post. So what are your New Year's Resolutions?? I never really made one, but i think i'm going to stick with my whole life resolution of living every day to the fullest. I also hope to have as much fun as possible with my friends and try to keep in better contact with my other friends. I hope that you have the most fantastic time in London and i wish you all the best of luck in the coming year, hopefully it will be one of the greatest years yet. Later!!

Well, you just covered some of them: living each day as full as I can, and even when something crappy does happen, try to let go of it, and start each day fresh, another you mentioned keeping better contact with friends, this one is major for me especially since this task will be harder than before in the next few months.

Post Holiday Obligatory Blog Post 1/02/2006 01:26:00 AM

Okay, so I know that after all the fun and good times that I've experience this year during the holidays, the natural thing to do is come and post about it, right?

I keep thinking, go blog about this stuff, and that thought goes through my mind about 3 or 4 times a day, whenever I sit down at the computer, but the truth is that I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't know if it's just cause I don't really want to, or if I just don't feel as if "it's time". Maybe I haven't had my share of greatness pass yet, so that I can cram all of it into one blog post. I think that's almost the opposite of what's happening though.

Because if I had blogged about each event after it occurred, it would have been more joyous and detailed having been written so close to the time of thing. But now, because I keep procrastinating I'm not gonna remember any of the fun details that I made a note to myself to remember and post about, so that when I do forget I can go back and reminice, cause I posted about it.

And even though I'm perfectly aware of all this (especially since I just typed it out) and the whole point of me signing in was to finally blog about how my holiday was, I just don't feel like making this post of any revevance now that it's filled with this worthlessness. So the whole reason behind this post has once again been avoided. SG
